The neighborhood grew in the early twentieth century and much of that housing survives — Craftsman bungalows, Colonial Revivals and Mediterranean homes on a street grid close to downtown.
People walk here constantly, so a display gets seen from the sidewalk at an easy pace.
Along Coffee Pot Bayou, homes face the water, giving the edge of the neighborhood a genuine waterfront address.
Mature trees line many of the streets, and the canopy over the sidewalks is part of what makes the neighborhood feel the way it does after dark.
What works here
Craft over quantity.
A bungalow porch is the heart of the house, and that is where the lighting belongs. Garland fitted to the columns and railings, warm bulbs, and a clean line along the eave say more than covering the whole facade.
Older trim and woodwork need mounting that holds without marking them, and that is worked out before anyone climbs anything.
On the bayou side, the water gives a Coffee Pot home a second audience. Holiday lighting Old Northeast along the bayou is planned for both.
On a street where every house has a porch facing the sidewalk, a well-lit porch reads as part of a shared scene rather than a solo act.
